How Long Does It Take to Make a Same-Day Crown?

If you’ve ever had a traditional dental crown, you know the process can take multiple visits, involve a temporary crown, and require weeks of waiting for a dental lab to finish the final product. But thanks to modern technology, same-day crowns are changing the game. With this approach, you can walk into your dentist’s office and leave a few hours later with a permanent, custom-fitted crown — no temporary crown, no second appointment.

So, how long does it actually take to make a same-day crown? Let’s break it down.

The Technology Behind Same-Day Crowns

Same-day crowns are possible because of CAD/CAM technology (Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing). This process allows your dentist to digitally scan your tooth, design the crown right in the office, and use an in-house milling machine to craft it from a block of ceramic. The entire process is done in a single visit, which is where the “same-day” name comes from.

Step-by-Step Timeline

Tooth Preparation (30–60 minutes)

Just like with a traditional crown, your dentist first prepares your tooth by removing any decay and reshaping it so the crown will fit properly. This may take around half an hour to an hour, depending on the complexity of your case. If you need any additional treatment, like a root canal or filling, this step may take a little longer.

Digital Scanning and Design (15–30 minutes)

Instead of using messy impression materials, your dentist will take a digital scan of your tooth using a small camera. This creates a 3D image that is loaded into specialized CAD software. Your dentist will then design your crown, adjusting the size, shape, and color to match your natural teeth.

Milling the Crown (15–30 minutes)

Once the design is finalized, the information is sent to the in-office milling machine. This machine carves the crown out of a high-quality ceramic block with incredible precision. You can often watch the process — it’s like a tiny sculpture being made right before your eyes.

Fitting, Adjustments, and Bonding (20–40 minutes)

After milling, the dentist checks the crown’s fit, makes any needed adjustments, and may stain or glaze it for a perfect match. Once you and your dentist are happy with the look and feel, the crown is bonded to your tooth with strong dental cement.

Total Time Estimate

For most patients, the entire same-day crown process takes about two to three hours from start to finish. This can vary depending on how much preparation your tooth needs and how complex the crown design is, but it’s still significantly faster than the traditional method, which often takes two to three weeks.

If you’re looking for convenience, efficiency, and a natural-looking result, same-day crowns are a fantastic option. You’ll save time, avoid the hassle of a temporary crown, and leave your appointment with a fully functional, permanent restoration — all in just a single visit.
